JOURNAL | SUPER INGREDIENTS TO ADD TO YOUR DAY TO BE HEALTHIER AND HAPPIER

By Golden Grind

The “super-ingredient” is currently taking the fitness world by storm, which are add-on power-foods that unlock a number of health benefits from their consumption. These ingredients are different to the superfoods you already know and love (think goji berries, kale, etc.) as you wouldn’t consume them on their own and are instead added to a number of recipes, sprinkled on smoothie bowls or taken through pharmaceutical grade capsules.

This super-ingredient trend was the driving force behind starting Golden Grind, as we wanted to create products that made it easier for individuals to consume our favourite super-ingredient, turmeric, and take full advantage of its wide range of benefits.

Of course turmeric isn’t the only super-ingredient on the market, with many local Australian brands experimenting and creating new product ranges featuring some powerful and all-natural additives. Below we have listed some of the super-ingredients we are loving at the moment.

  1. Turmeric

Starting with our favourite, turmeric is a long celebrated spice, known for for its bountiful health benefits and traditional medicinal properties. The golden spice is known for being rich in antioxidants and its anti-inflammatory qualities, and is a colourful addition to curries, smoothies and even lattes. Turmeric is also becoming a popular ingredient in health supplements and in beauty products.

  1. Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds are just starting to rise in popularity, due to being rich in protein, healthy fats and essential amino acids. Benefits include reducing the risk of heart disease , the effects of eczema and the symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Either take in the form of hemp oil tablets or top your morning yoghurt with the seed form.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is so accessible these days and can be bought from the shelf of your local supermarket. Recent studies have linked regular consumption to weight loss, reducing cholesterol and lowering blood sugar levels. Add it to your favourite soups or to your salad dressing to curb cravings later in the day.

  1. Raw Cacao Powder

Raw cacao powder is an unprocessed form of the cacao bean, and is packed with potassium, calcium and magnesium. It has more antioxidants than blueberries and is the highest source of plant protein. Cook with it to make a healthy chocolate pudding or mix with turmeric and almond milk to create a delicious alternative to hot chocolate.

  1. Spirulina

Spirulina is a plant-based supplement that is high in B, C and E vitamins, as well as natural iron. It is thought to support brain function and is high in protein, making it the perfect addition to afternoon smoothies to keep you full for longer and focused at work.

It is such an exciting time to be a part of the food industry, as more creative products that are loaded with health benefits are brought to the market. We can’t wait to see what else research discovers about the above ingredients – who knows, maybe we will start experimenting with some of them in the near future!
