Is Matcha Tea Keto Friendly?

By Matcha Maiden

If you’ve even breathed the air near someone in the wellness world in the past year or so, you will have probably heard the word “keto” being bandied around before. The ketogenic diet is basically a very low carb, high fat diet the combination of which puts your body into a metabolic state known as ketosis.

In ketosis, your body becomes more efficient at burning fat for energy and can lower blood sugar and insulin levels. There are many studies to support the benefits of a keto diet, particularly in terms of losing weight and improving general health but also even in terms of fighting diabetes, cancer, and epilepsy.

One of the things people like about the keto diet is that the high protein levels are so filling that you can lose weight without having to count calories or track your food intake too strictly. The question then becomes not so much how much you should eat but WHAT you should be eating.

There are many lists available of keto friendly and non-keto friendly foods but the question we’ve been asked many times is whether matcha tea is keto friendly. Of course, as “green tea Australia” homecoming queen we figured we should let you all know that the answer is YES!

Keto Matcha Latte Recipe

As matcha tea is not high in carbs or sugar, it is absolutely keto friendly. In fact, caffeine is recommended by some keto experts as it also aids in energy, performance and metabolic function. While the signature keto beverage that has spread like wildfire is the bulletproof coffee boosting a regular coffee with high fat oils (usually MCT oil), the bulletproof matcha is also an alternative that we personally love!

We recommend the following recipe:

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 teaspoon high quality matcha tea
  • 1/2 tablespoon MCT oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon stevia (or preferred sweetener to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup nut milk of choice (we love coconut)
  • 1 cup boiled water

How to Prepare

  1. Add matcha tea powder in boiled water and blend it using bamboo whisk or frappe maker or milk frother.
  2. Add all other ingredients in blender and blend them all together and Enjoy!

Tip – You can enjoy it as a hot drink or iced latte by adding some ice cubes and serving the milk cold. Tea-licious!
